"To Master John, the English maid
A Horn Book gives of Gingerbread
And that the Child may learn the better
As he can name, he eats the Letter.
Proceeding thus with vast delight,
He spells and gnaws from left to right!"
HORN BOOKS were for centuries a child's introduction to reading. The horn book got its name from the translucent sheet of cow horn, held in place by tacks, to protect its printed
lessonsheet. The simple text was typically the alphabet and the Lord's Prayer (Our Father) fastened onto a quarter-inch thick wooden paddle.
